 My daughter celebrated her 27th birthday yesterday.  You probably would never know it to look at her.  She’s so petite with a narrow frame.  Nothing like her mother’s expanse.  And she’s kind too.  She carries a positive outlook and loves people.  Never complains because she cannot maneuver through the world like other young people.  The truth is, she is ‘old’ for her age and condition.  Her medical team speaks of her as a miracle in the making.  I speak of her as my companion.  Mother and daughter, yes.  But, good friends too.  No one expected her to live this long.  Me either, I’m sorry to admit.  Disease makes no promises of a good life, does it?  But, the human spirit can.  My daughter proved that on her birthday.  She gave me the most precious of gifts!  With the aid of her nurse, my daughter ate applesauce for the first time in her life!  She did so with great pride!  She didn’t choke, cough, stop breathing.  She just sipped…and applesauce glazed her chin while tears glazed mine.  It’s just applesauce, you might say.  But, it’s not to me or to her.  It is hope.  It is life.
